About David G Smith

His own way of bronze sculpture creation, for anyone who might be interested in how he makes his pieces, a bit like making a suit of armour, he starts off by making an actual size model in plasticine, to use as a tailors dummy or mannequin, from this he make and cut paper templates of all the parts required to make the whole figure, He then use the templates to mark out on bronze plate all the pieces he needs, these are then cut out, annealed (softened) ready to be hammered into the required shapes for the figure, they are fitted onto the mannequin, and when complete, are ready to be assembled, welded together or onto an armature, when that is finished it is ready to have whatever finish has been decided on, usually some form of traditional patination, finally polished, and signed.

Artist Statement of David G Smith

My bronze and stainless steel sculptures are all unique hand crafted, I use my own method to create the one off figures, this means you can have a sculpture fashioned solely by myself. I get my inspiration mainly from other artistic enterprises like dance, music plays a big part in the thought process too. I like the figures to show plenty of action and movement, and I try to portray the human form as realistically a possible.

Awards and Prizes of David G Smith

Having no formal art training, apart from some evening classes in sculpture and life drawing, his main influences come from his artistic parents, and his name being Smith, a trade name of old, so some of what he does as a sculptor, beating and shaping metal, I suppose is in his genes.
His early sculpture pieces were wood carvings, and later stone carving both figurative and architectural, some restoration work, whilst putting into practice clay and wax modeling, mould making and resin casting, techniques he has learnt in evening classes, always very useful to a sculptor.

Now to his hand crafted bronze sculptures, he uses his own method to create the one off figures he makes, this means you can have a sculpture fashioned solely by himself. His inspiration is mainly drawn from other artistic enterprises like dance. He likes his figures to show as much movement as he can portray, also to portray the human form as faithfully a possible.

He has been sculpting and for a living for over 40 years, and has been fortunate enough to have been commissioned most notably, to create sculptures for three of The Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s cruise ships, ‘ Legend of the Seas ‘, ‘Grandeur of the Seas ‘ and ‘ Vision of the Seas ‘.
Other corporate commissions include.
Singapore Airlines, ’Cuprous Nymphaea’ for their first class lounge in Changi Airport, Others include,
Colin Draycott Group, their company logo ‘Teamwork’.
Rokes Ltd, garden sculptures,
Decora Ltd ranges of sports and decor related masters for casting,
And private commissions, include Dr&Mrs Layton, two resting dancers for their Cotswold estate,
Mr&Mrs L Slater a balancing figure ‘Jester&ball’, for their London home.

As for his current work, which he have concentrated on for the past 16 years, working on his own sculptures taking away the stress of deadlines, leaving him more time to be artistic, which does have its own challenges, but he does enjoy the creative process, transforming his thoughts and ideas into solid permanent sculptures. Trying to get it right for his own satisfaction, and of course yours, they are mainly the aforementioned dance related poses.

Customer comment on 'Brasil - Chess (Corporate Commission of an entire edition)' by Plamen Dimitrov
Although it seemed a daunting project to commission a sculpture on the internet with a tight deadline, Plamen Dimitrov in Bulgaria made it as easy as possible for me in Brazil by producing a series of little clay sketches after each email and sending photos it seemed by return. He worked round the clock and was incredibly intuitive with his understanding of what I wanted. This was despite an 8 hour time difference and having poor English as our common language. He w...
